CURRENT RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Leveraging the success of the hand-held land mine detector, L-3 CyTerra has developed an Autonomous Mine Detection Sensor (AMDS) packaged on a remotely operated vehicular robot (PackBot). The AMDS program, sponsored by the U.S. Army CERDEC RDES Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate, sought to produce an autonomous mine detection vehicle that achieved the same performance of a handheld mine detector. For the AMD sensor, L-3 CyTerra transferred battlefield-proven AN/PSS-14 technology to the AMDS including the sensor head, electronics unit, and clutter filtering algorithms. In addition, autonomous detection algorithms were designed for both anti-tank and anti-personnel mines which help reduce the operator's work load and the associated training requirements for this technology.
